About:

I’m Angela Meijer, and I make art in Lake Country, Wisconsin. There is always something personal at the heart of my paintings, memories, gestures, and light coming together in layered surfaces. I mix photography, collage, and vibrant color, building each piece until it feels alive, like a fragment of my own story told in paint.

I studied fine art photography in the Netherlands and earned my BFA in 1997. My early work appeared in limited-edition books and installations. Everything shifted when I became a mother. I sold my field camera and began painting daily. Abstraction opened a new language guided by intuition, movement, and the emotional force of color. It allowed me to express what photography alone could not hold.

Years later, photography returned, this time embedded directly into the paintings. Faces and figures move in and out of view, tucked inside Fauvist-inspired gardens. The process mirrors memory itself. Images surface, dissolve, and resurface in unexpected ways. I am drawn to the tension between what is seen and what is hidden, uncovering pieces of a story within each layer.

Rooted in the expressive traditions of Fauvism and Expressionism, my work explores how perspective reshapes remembrance and how light transforms what we think we see. Color carries emotion, structure, and meaning.

At its core, my practice is about showing up. Each painting evolves slowly through layering, revision, and response. I rarely begin with a fixed outcome. Instead, the work becomes a conversation between past and present, between what is concealed and what is revealed.
